This week I've put together some thoughts that came out
of a recent recommendation to one of my subscribers.

Hopefully this will help you out when trying to make
improvements.

2.  When and how to promote affiliate programs
==============================================

Should you promote affiliate programs from a site that sells
its own products?

To answer that I think you need to know when and how you
should use affiliate programs in this situation.

<note>
If you don't have your own product, and want to
create one, read my footnote at the end of this
  article.
</note>

I visited a subscriber's site recently (thanks Linda!), and
asked a few questions about her products and website.

She has excellent products that her company produces and she
uses her site to promote these products. I had noticed a few
banners for another company's affiliate program on the site
and was concerned as to the impact this might have on
product sales. Especially when she told me she hadn't made
much from this particular program.

This led me to make a when and how recommendation for her:

When should a site selling its own products promote
  another company's products or services?

How should you promote these products and services
  from your site?

Affiliate programs can definitely add to your website income,
but at what cost are you willing to promote this extra
money?

If a visitor to your site clicks on a link and visits the
merchant's site and doesn't purchase anything, then you are
only out the commission, right?

Wrong!

You've just lost a potential customer for your products.

When a surfer hits a site and a banner or text ad catches
her eye and she clicks on it, chances are she's not coming
back.

You never even had a chance to show her your fabulous
products, or get an email address to tell her about them
later.

Even if that person earns you some affiliate income, you
have lost much more by losing a potential customer.

Should a site that sells products *ever* promote affiliate
programs?

Sure, if you can find programs that offer products and
services that your target audience would enjoy.

But don't send them off to an affiliate merchant UNTIL you
have made them a customer of your products!

After you've had a chance to show them your products and
you've tried everything you can to sell them, then you can
tell them about other products and services offered by
your affiliate partners.

This leads us to *how* we should promote affiliate programs
from sites selling products.

Your top priority is to either sell your own products or
get contact information from your visitors so that you can
contact them in the future.

Offer a newsletter or a free report with useful information
on subjects related to your products.

After a visitor becomes your customer, then you can tell her
about other products and services (through affiliate
programs.)

When you ship her order include a flyer telling her about
this great website that you visit frequently, or about
great products that compliment the one they just purchased
from you.

Make sure you include your affiliate link so you can get
credit for the referral. (If you need some help on making
that ugly URL more useable, read the importance of redirect
pages in Issue #26 of this newsletter:
http://www.affiliatematch.com/newsletter/newsletter26.htm )

Because they have purchased from you they will be more
receptive to recommendations that you make, so you have a
better chance of making more money from your affiliate
partners.

Plus, you have made a sale of the thing that makes you the
most money...your own products!

You will also find that some of the people that signup for
your newsletter or free report just aren't going to buy your
products.

Sending them to your affiliate links might allow you to make
some money after all, and you've given your best shot at
trying to get them to buy your products first.

Affiliate programs are great, but knowing when and how to
promote them can make them even greater!

<footnote>

If you don't have your own product or service to sell,
let me make a recommendation for you. I'm currently
about half-way through Make Your Knowledge Sell!, which
I'm using to guide me through the creation of my first
  info product.

Affiliate programs have been good to me, but I finally
realized that I need my own product that I control to
help out when these company's go belly up, or decide to
  lower their commissions.

I found a niche idea and I'm running with it. MYKS! is
by far the best resource out there if you have any plans
of creating your own ebook, subscription site, paid
  newsletter, or whatever.

If you're tired of decreased or lost commissions, or are
ready to take your business to the next level, have a
look at this book to get some ideas and learn how to do
  it right the first time:
