Is your website idea a "bad" idea?

This week I answer a few more concerns that came out of last week's survey.

Again I thank you for taking the time to answer the questions for me. Hopefully I can pay you back by focusing on the areas that you requested.

Enjoy!

1. Is your website idea a "bad" idea?
======================================

Several of the survey respondents told me they were having trouble figuring out what topic they should develop their website around.

One even stated that every time s/he came up with a great idea, then did some research on it, the topic would come up as having too much competition, or already over-populated.

This is a very interesting point because everything you read tells you to find a new, un-tapped niche and become the top expert, and then dominate that niche.

We are told that this is the ONLY way to make money on the Internet.

Finding a niche CAN be very profitable, but it is also very difficult to discover a new niche.

Why?

Because it isn't as simple as just finding a topic that no one else has found yet: That topic also has to have people dedicated to it that have money to spend, that want the products that you are selling, and that are willing to buy anything to begin with.

It is very difficult to find that perfect mix... especially now that there are so many other people online trying to do exactly the same thing.

When I started AffiliateMatch there were already a ton of affiliate program directories. There were also several "big players" out there that dominated the market.

I still managed to do the things necessary to build it into a profitable website.

Did I bump any of the "big players" out of their positions?

No. But I realized that I didn't have to.

There are many, many, many people surfing the Internet today. And even though you may have a competitor that has better search engine positioning, or more newsletter subscribers, you can STILL reach people that have never heard of your competitors.

You don't have to concentrate so much of your time and effort trying to find that undiscovered niche. If you have an idea that you like, and that you feel you would enjoy trying to make money from... go for it!

Figure out if there is a way that you can do things a little better, or a little different from what your competitors are doing.

Find a slightly different, more focused aspect of the subject area that want to go into.

For example: Instead of tackling "Real Estate", try "Real Estate for Texans", or whatever state you live in.

By narrowing your focus you can greatly decrease the number of competitors that you will have.

If you can't narrow the topic down any, that's ok. As long as it is a subject you will enjoy learning more about, go ahead and do it anyway.

As you learn more and get more experience you will start to see niches form that you would have never been able to spot in the beginning.

Don't hold off your online business while you wait to discover the next million dollar niche. This approach is like putting off enjoying life until you have won the lottery.

The problem with this is that if you never actually win the lottery, you will have missed out on some great chances to enjoy life.

The Internet is the same way: Don't risk passing up great opportunities because you were on the sidelines trying to find that ONE idea that will make you rich.

So, when you ask me if your website idea is a bad idea... my response is: the only bad ideas are the ones that never get acted on.

2. Where should I start?
=========================

Another interesting bit of information that came out of the survey:

A LARGE number of you are trying to figure out where to start, or aren't sure how to go about it.

My answer for this problem is simply:

Get started!

Just get started. Find a subject that you enjoy, and that you are willing to spend time learning more about, and start creating your website.

Use the free hosting services, put up a bunch of banners, DON'T get your own domain name, make all the mistakes you possibly can!

Why would I give you such terrible advice?

Because this is how you learn! This is how you learn the basics of creating a web page, uploading to someone else's server, finding your site on the Internet, and then trying to figure out how to get other people to find your site.

Everything you read (I'm guilty of this too!) tells you that you must have your own domain name before you even start, you must have a ton of content ready to put on your website to keep people coming back, your website must be on a profitable subject that will surely make you a ton of money, you must drive traffic to your website, etc., etc., etc., etc., etc.!

The problem is that you spend all of your time trying to figure out what your website is going to be about, and trying to find a cool domain name for it, finding the perfect website hosting company that will keep your site up 24 hours a day...

But you never get started!

Get started today... right now... not later... now.

Go and create an account on a free hosting company, figure out how to create a web page, then upload it using the instructions that were given to you by the hosting company.

Don't know how to create a web page? Go to your favorite search engine and search for "HTML tutorial" and then read until you've learned what you need to know to create a simple page that says:

"This is my new website and I'm proud of it!"

Join an affiliate program... it doesn't matter which one, just figure out how to join one and join it.

Go back and modify your web page with the information they gave you when you signed up for the affiliate program.

Once you have done this, open your browser and try to find your new website.

Can you find it? If not, figure out why. Read the help section of your website host.

Once you find your website, go back and change the font on your page, bold some words, add a banner promoting the affiliate program you joined.

Move the banner to the bottom of the page instead of the top. Just make changes to try and make it look better.

Add more content. What content? It doesn't matter, just talk about your favorite subject for a while: Fishing, skateboarding, racing cars, comic books, whatever.

After you have done this, figure out how to add Meta tags to your website with keywords and a description of what it is about.

When you have done this, go to every search engine you can possibly find and figure out what you have to do to submit your new web page.

Did you do this yet?

If so, you are now on your way to making money on the Internet.

Did I just tell you that your new web page is going to make you money?

Nope. The exercise that I had you follow took you from start to finish of creating and promoting a web page.

I intentionally left out the little details because THAT is what is going to get you on your way to making money online.

Having to go out and figure out how to do each of those steps is where you will start to build your foundation for future wealth making.

The only way you are going to get the chance to do this is to get started right now... then as you learn more, you will start to figure out what it takes to earn money online.
